Nearly all downstrike Olivers display the serial number in two primary locations - on the frame and on the carriage. (The exceptions are the Oliver No. 1, Woodstock, and Remodelled Oliver which do not have a number on the carriage.) These serial numbers always matched coming out of the factory. Both the carriage and frame were stamped with the serial number because the carriages are easily removable. If an Oliver is found with mismatching serial numbers, the carriage originally went to a different machine. Oliver Nos. 3, 4, 5, and 6 also have the number on the underside of the right type tower, a rod on the underside of the machine, and stamped on the backside of a plaque under the machine near the spacebar. The number on the plaque becomes visible when the plate is removed. Oliver Nos. 7 and 8 also have the serial number on a rod under the machine.
